These are images of an American gay couple’s long-term relationship, spanning over forty years of shared life in Michigan and then California. There were several layered ideas which acted as starting points for the series. One was an interest in hidden histories and specifically in gay life stories; here was a body of images from a couple’s photo album, a record of decades of mutual experience and intimacy and of networks of friendships, which were by necessity invisible to the public eye.

The second idea I wanted to explore in these paintings was the nature of the relationship between the observed and photographed loved one and the observer and lover behind the lens, and the degree to which both looks, the gaze of the looker and the returning gaze of the looked-at can be discerned within the photographic record.
